This is high time for the MODI Government to announce the prestigious BHARAT RATNA AWARD, the highest honour of INDIAN ETHOS, for Mrinal Sen, the maverick maestro, who has been ailing for sometime. Mrinal Sen is 92 and has made 28 films, most of which won the International and National awards for their aesthetic quality and artistic merits. He is the one director responsible for DADASAHEB PHALKE AWARDS FOR ADOOR GOPALAKRISHNAN AND SHYAM BENEGAL. He is also responsible for creating PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING TRUST of which ADOOR GOPALAKRISHNAN is the Chairman.
In a survey this critic has found all major filmmakers of India such as Shyam Benegal, Adoot Gopalakrishnan, Soumita Chatterjee, actor, Girish Kasaravalli, Saeed Mirza, Apurba K. Bir, Goutam Ghose, T.V Chandran, Jahnu Barua, Shabana Azmi, Sharmila Tagore, Basu Chatterjee, Tarun Majumder, Rupa Ganguly, Aparna Sen, Rituparna Sengupta, Aribam Syam Sharma, Govind Nihalani, Sandip Ray, Monomohon Mahapatra, Nandita Das, Literary figure U.R.Anantha Murthy, Rajiv Merhotra etc etc seem to have endorsed the bestowing this rare honour on MRINAL SEN while mentally active at the age of 92.
During the time of great Satyajit Ray, Bharat Ratna was announced after his sudden death in 1992. But unfortunately the same award was handed over to his son Sandip Ray, also a director, after I had raised the issue in the Indian Express on front page. In fact, Bharat Ratna award reached Ray-family seven years after Ray’s demise.
Finally, it must be mentioned so long MRINAL SEN, our mentor, remains mentally active and physically fit, BHARAT RATNA AWARD SHOULD BE OFFERED TO HIM without any hesitation. Procrastination in the matter is likely to trigger off partial attitude as it did happen
